Castratie of sterilisatie.
Bringing a puppy home is mostly a celebration: the first walk, the first night without whining, the first time he falls asleep on your lap. Still, it pays to know in advance what care costs in the first year. Then a vet bill is something you saw coming, not a surprise.
Below is an honest overview of a puppy's health costs: what almost everyone pays, what differs per dog and what you can do to cushion the big spikes. The amounts are indicative. Vets set their own rates, so ask for a price list.
The fixed costs of the first six months
A puppy starts with a health check at your vet, usually in the first week after coming home. The vet checks heart, lungs, teeth, hips and skin, and goes through the vaccinations with you. Expect around 30 to 50 euros for that first consultation.
Then comes the vaccination schedule. In the first months a puppy usually gets two to three shots against, among other things, distemper, parvo and hepatitis, with a booster after a year. A vaccination costs 40 to 70 euros on average. A kennel cough vaccination is a separate shot, handy if you take your puppy to puppy class, a dog school or a boarding kennel.
A few more fixed items are on the list:
- Chip and registration: about 35 to 60 euros. Many breeders have the puppy chipped already, so check that he is also registered in your name.
- Worming: in the first months a puppy gets a few worming courses, 10 to 25 euros each.
- Flea and tick prevention: about 10 to 25 euros a month, depending on the product and your dog's weight.
Together the first six months often come to 250 to 450 euros, not counting food, a bed and puppy class.
What differs per dog
Besides the fixed list there are costs that depend on your dog and your choices.
Neutering or spaying. If you choose it, the procedure is usually cheaper for a male than for a female. As a guide: 150 to 350 euros for a male and 250 to 500 euros for a female, depending on weight and clinic. Many vets advise discussing the timing with your dog in the room, because the best age differs per breed and size.
Teeth. The milk teeth are replaced around four to six months. Usually that goes by itself, sometimes a milk tooth stays in and the vet removes it later. A dental check at the annual vaccination costs little and prevents a big bill later.
The breed. Large breeds can suffer from hip and elbow problems, flat-faced breeds from breathing issues and small breeds from kneecaps that slip. A check or an X-ray then makes sense, and it has a price tag. Ask the breeder for the health results of the parents. It does not say everything, but it is a good start.
Where it really adds up
You can plan for the amounts above. The bills you cannot plan for often come from curiosity. A puppy puts everything in his mouth: a sock, a toy, a cherry stone or a corn cob. If something gets stuck, X-rays follow, sometimes an operation and a night at the clinic. That quickly comes to 1,500 to 3,000 euros or more.
Poisoning, a bite wound, a broken leg after a jump off the sofa or a severe stomach infection also belong to the puppy year. The point is not to scare you. It is to know that moments like these happen mostly in the first year, and that you cannot schedule them.
How to keep costs under control
- Set aside an amount in advance. A fixed amount a month in a separate account gives peace of mind, even when nothing happens for a while.
- Puppy-proof your home. Cables, shoes, socks and food at table height are the classic culprits. A good chew toy saves you more than it costs.
- Go to the appointments. Vaccinations and check-ups are cheaper than the diseases they protect against.
- Ask for a price estimate before a procedure. Vets are happy to give one, and differences between clinics can be larger than you think.
- Look at insurance early. The younger your dog, the easier it usually is to insure him. A condition you only discover after taking out the policy is often excluded.
Our partner Figo
For that last point we work this year with Figo, the pet insurer built with veterinary expertise. Unlimited consultations with your vet are included as standard, plus a prevention budget for things like vaccinations. For a puppy that is exactly the part you use most in the first year: vaccinations and check-ups often fall under it. And if a big bill does arrive, a large share is reimbursed. Claims are handled quickly and without paperwork, so you can keep your attention on your puppy.
With discount code EMGCPP your first month is free. That code is there specifically for Co Pet Parent members. Enter it in the premium calculator on the Figo website and the first month is settled automatically.
Unsure? Work out a year of premiums and put that next to the cost of a single operation. That sum is quick to make, and then you have made it before you need it.
And when your puppy cannot come along?
In the first weeks a puppy cannot always go everywhere: before the last vaccination boarding kennels and dog parks are often not advisable, and a long working day is too long for such a little one. Then it helps to have someone who already knows your puppy.
Through Co Pet Parent you find a regular dog lover in your neighbourhood who comes by regularly, so your puppy grows up with a second familiar face. That makes the holiday, the overtime and the first times home alone a lot calmer, for you and for him.
Here is how to start: create a profile, tell people who your puppy is and what makes him happy, and see who lives near you.
